I consider myself as a "CONVENTIONAL GLEANER PERSON", but a "G" was more rare than a dodo bird in our area and the area was plentiful of "SILVER" in the early 70's. Probably about 10 years ago I watched a very nice diesel hydro go for $800 at a local consignment auction. Still have one neighbor with one and it was shedded until a few years ago. Soured him on Gleaners and I think he went to a CIH 1660. He spent the winter overhauling it and 3 hrs into harvest the following year he lost a bearing. Grandpa said it was just a so-so combine, but was not sad to see it go when he upgraded to his L which he said was night and day better. As GM Guy said air flow was woefully inadequate. So basically they were not perfect, but they were dead reliable and for the era had awesome capacity, and so many guys have fond memories of their old G's. The front axle and finals were very much up to the task. They were capable of running 6R30 or 8R20 cornheaders (yes, AC had 20 inch equipment back in the day, we have a A420 and a C620 header in the collection ) with some counterweight. Supposedly to this day there is a grass grower in Oklahoma that has (3 ) Gl diesel hydros that they use to harvest their grass seed crop.

That said, the combo of the barely adequate fan and the oversized powerplant made for a good grass combine. The walkers were a little short, and the turboed engine could get you in trouble loss wise with the short walkers. The hydro machine does not have this issue, so Dad tried to only buy hydros. due to the nature of the variable ground drive, it was always pushing out, and it would work the nut loose, and then things would beat around and cause alot of trouble. Gear drive machines had a tapered spline on the mainshaft that held the main pulley.
